Philadelphia Phillies have lucky number seven pick in June's MLB Draft

In tonight's Phillies news update, the Philadelphia Phillies are slated to pick seventh in next week's MLB Draft - a pick which has been extremely profitable for several teams over the past 25 years.

According to Eric Bacharach and Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, "past No. 7 picks include Clayton Kershaw (2006), Troy Tulowitzki ('05), Nick Markakis ('03), Prince Fielder ('02) and Frank Thomas ('89). Of course, there are numerous No. 7 picks who never made the big leagues, but after missing on several first-round picks in recent years, the Phillies hope to hit big here."

The Philadelphia Phillies haven't had a true hit with a first-round pick since Cole Hamels back in 2002. Two years prior, the Phillies selected superstar second baseman Chase Utley with the 15th overall pick in the draft.

However, no first rounder since Hamels in 2002 has made an indelible impact on the MLB club. While it's still too early to tell with some of the Phillies' latest picks, it may be safe to say that this draft could be a key one for the organization and GM Ruben Amaro Jr.
