Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield is going into his senior season after losing a year of eligibility when he transferred to OU from Texas Tech, but he may be getting that year back.
He lost the year of eligibility because he transferred to another school in the conference, despite being a waon at Texas Tech and never receiving a scholarship. According to SportsDay, the Big 12 is considering changing the rule.
If the vote passes at the Big 12's faculty representatives meeting on Wednesday, Mayfield will get that year of eligibility left.
"I think we all ought to be a little bit thoughtful about it," Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. "Absent Baker Mayfield getting relief, he'll have a year of eligibility left and won't be able to use it in our conference but instead would go someplace else and use it. That might not be in anybody's best interest."
Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione agreed with Bowlsby, calling it a "student-athlete request with broader implications" that will affect other walk-ons moving forward.
Mayfield earned the starting quarterback job at Oklahoma after sitting out a year due to transfer rules, and led the Sooners to the College Football playoff. He completed 68.1 percent of his passes for 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns - which ranking third in the country in passing efficiency.
