New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has received more than his fair share of criticism during his time in New York because of perceived lack of leadership, but rookie Kristaps Porzingis says nothing could be further from the truth:
“He’s being a real leader,” says Porzingis, via ESPN. “He’s sharing the ball, he’s scoring -- he’s doing everything for the team.”
Porzingis also said that Anthony has been a real mentor for him since he was drafted. While Anthony's on-court play hasn't changed - he's still a ball-dominant offensive force that prefers to work in isolation plays - head coach Derek Fisher said he has seen a change in Anthony's mentality.
“Great players always appreciate and enjoy having guys on the floor that can make plays,” Fisher said. "Guys like him believe that they can carry the whole thing, so the more guys you add that can take some pressure off, I think the better off we are.”
Anthony, for one, agrees with Fisher.
“Personality-wise, from a basketball standpoint, this is a good group of guys," he said. "It’s easy for me to trust them.”
Anthony is averaging 21.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game so far this season while leading the Knicks to a 14-14 record.
