The New York Knicks reportedly were very close to exercising their team option on guard Shane Larkin earlier this week. However, it appears they've changed course.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Knicks are likely to pass on Larkin's option for 2015-16 in order to free up more cap space for next offseason:

Larkin is only due around $1.6 million next season, so his salary cap hit would normally be negligible. However, Larkin failed to set the world on fire in his rookie campaign and the young guard might not factor into New York's future plans as initially expected.

The Knicks could also opt to re-sign Larkin after the season, keeping his $1.6 million salary off the books while they chase one or two marquee free agents.

Altogether, it remains to be seen exactly what the Knicks' plans for Shane Larkin will be. Stay tuned.
