The New York Knicks are in the tough position of trying to undergo a massive rebuild, and as a result have made several moves to free cap space and attain young players they want to evaluate for the future.
Forward Amare Stoudemire is one of the holdovers, largely due to his massive $23.4 million salary. His contract expires after the season, and his future is largely up in the air.
According to the New York Post, the Knicks have discussed potentially waiving Stoudemire to create an open roster spot for a D-Leaguer or player they can get for a trade exception:
[Knicks President Phil] Jackson could waive him to open a roster spot for a D-Leaguer or a player they gain from a trade exception. But somehow Stoudemire is still a fan favorite for the diligence and class he has shown in coming back from multiple knee surgeries.
“I haven’t talked with Phil or [general manager] Steve Mills yet about the future,’’ Stoudemire said. “I’m sure we’ll talk soon about it. I don’t think something will be done this season. But the future is in their hands and my health. I want to make sure I stay healthy and maintain myself the rest of my career.’’
The Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic are both potential destinations for Stoudemire if the Knicks do waive him. He is averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds in 24.9 minutes a game so far this season.
