Patriots Rumors: New England Interested In Adding Johnny Manziel?

The New England Patriots are in desperate need of depth at quarterback and a long-term answer at the position with only veteran Brian Hoyer behind Tom Brady on the depth chart.

Many expect the Patriots to try to find that answer in the NFL Draft, but there is another option New England could be exploring - Johnny Manziel.

Area scout Jonathan Howard attended the University of San Diego's pro day yesterday in which Manziel took part, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss, and he breaks down why the Patriots may have some interest in the former Heisman trophy winner.

The Patriots have 10 former first-round picks on their roster (seven of whom entered the NFL with other teams), as they traditionally target players with unique traits, and pedigree. Manziel checks that box.

If he truly is committed, the presence of a former first-round pick trying to work his way up from the bottom of the barrel could be a positive add to the locker room dynamic. And again, the quarterback room in New England is short on a third option right now.

Manziel has not played in two years after being released by the Cleveland Browns and, despite working out for a few CFL teams, has not played competitive football since 2015, his second season in the league.

In 2015, Manziel passed for 1,500 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions in nine games.
