Jim Harbaugh Announces Michigan Football Will Travel To South Africa In 2019

Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh announced on his podcast that the Wolverines will be traveling to South Africa in 2019.

It will be the third consecutive year in which Harbaugh has taken his team on an overseas trip, as he took them to Rome in 2017 and the team is currently in France. The trip to France is the first time a few Michigan players have been outside of the United States, including quarterbacks Shea Patterson and Joe Milton.

Harbaugh also discussed his plans for the 2020 trip and hopes to take the Wolverines to Greece.

Before the trip to Rome, Harbaugh laid out his plans to make the trips an annual occurrence.

"I envision it to be an annual (thing)," Harbaugh said. "I've got my places planned for year two, year three, year four. ... This is all centered around the study abroad, they'll have all of May off to pursue their studies abroad. I thought Rome was a good center spot...the possibilities are limitless and the educational opportunity for our players is to the moon."

While in France, Harbaugh took the team to Normandy to honor the Americans who fought in World War II and served in D-Day, stopping at the Memorial de Caen museum before a quick visit to Arromanches-les-Bains and a visit to the Normandy American Cemetery

“It puts football in perspective for you, that we’re all 18- to 22-year olds,” offensive lineman Ben Bredeson said of the visit. “We worry about going out and performing on Saturday when these guys were worried about fighting for their lives. Just makes you think about the bigger picture.”
