The Miami Marlins are reportedly considering free agent righty James Shields as a potential blockbuster free agent addition, provided they can sign him at a relatively cost-effective rate.

The Marlins checked in on Shields early in the offseason, and they had considerable interest in November. But if his price tag remains, as reported, at five years and at least $100 million, you can pretty much count Miami out. If the figures drop, however, the Marlins could definitely be in the mix.
While Shields established himself as a legitimate ace in his time with the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals, he hasn't been able to procure the type of guaranteed money he's looking for in negotiations. The 33-year-old reportedly has a $110 million offer on the table, but is currently looking for more guaranteed salary.

Shields has eclipsed the 200-inning mark in eight-straight seasons, pitching to a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA in 227 innings (34 starts) for the American League champion Kansas City Royals in 2014.
