New national champ UConn last played Hawai’i in 1972

With UConn winning the NCAA National Championship on Monday night, a thought came to mind. Have the Huskies ever played the University of Hawai’i in men’s basketball?

The answer is yes, but it was way back in 1972, and it took place in Storrs, Conn. For the record, Hawai’i’s “Fabulous Five” team won that game, 77-71.

The Huskies, who won their fifth national championship (all since 1999) on Monday, have never played the Rainbow Warriors in Hawai’i. In fact, UConn is probably the most prominent team to never appear in either the Rainbow Classic or Diamond Head Classic.
