The Denver Nuggets are in the market for a new head coach after firing Brian Shaw in early March. Interim head coach Melvin Hunt is one option to consider (more on that later) of the 5 Candidates To Permanently Replace Brian Shaw As Nuggets Head Coach.
Melvin Hunt, interim Nuggets head coach
The team played hard for Hunt in the season's final six weeks and he'd represent a seamless transition if the team wants to keep some level of continuity going forward. An unshakable optimist, Hunt at the reins could be just the shot in the arm this team needs heading into the seasons ahead.
Mike D'Antoni, former Los Angeles Lakers head coach
His tenure with the Lakers was a rough one indeed, but this is still the same guy who was the architect of those run-and-gun Phoenix Suns teams last decade who captured the imagination of the basketball world. With a little bit of rest behind him, Denver could be just the low-pressure environment he needs to work his magic once again.
Michael Malone, former Sacramento Kings head coach
Malone was fired in Sacramento after a year or so of maintaing an uneasy alliance with the front office, but he's still a talented coach with a knack of being a top-tier motivator in the face of outside pressures. Plus, it'd only be fitting for the guy who George Karl replaced to make his way to Denver.
Alvin Gentry, Golden State Warriors assistant coach
Gentry's 2009-10 Phoenix Suns averaged a league-best 110.2 points per game, going 54-28 and making it to the Western Conference Finals in the process. He is currently the lead assistant for the Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors, who have reached the NBA Finals for the first time in 40 years. Gentry has already interviewed twice for the Pelicans job, so he may be close to being plucked off the market. But, stay tuned.
Scott Brooks, former Oklahoma City Thunder head coach
Brooks was fired by the Thunder after they failed to make the postseason, but his resume is nearly unparalleled. He made the playoffs in five of his seven seasons in OKC, and won Coach of the Year in 2010. Denver is intrigued by his success and postseason experience, but his questionable offensive play calling drop him to the bottom of the list for the Nuggets.
