Yankees News: Joe Girardi, John Ryan Murphy Believe New York's Defense Will Improve

The New York Yankees are projected to be a much better defensive team than the first four games of the 2015 MLB season showed, but catcher John Paul Murphy isn't sweating those heightened expectations.

“We are. We are not supposed to be, we are,’’ Murphy said when asked if the Yankees are "supposed" to be better defensively, via the New York Post. “Games like this are going to happen. They shouldn’t happen, but they are going to happen.’’

Per manager Joe Girardi, Murphy was crossed up by reliever Esmil Rogers in the 19th inning of Friday night’s 6-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox, but it's Murphy who will have to eat the passed ball on his stat sheet.

“He played well and threw well in spring training,’’ Girardi said of Murphy, who won the backup catcher job over Austin Romine in spring training. “I still believe our defense is going to be a strength of ours but we haven’t shown it yet.”
