Come Sunday evening, there will be history.
To this point, the oldest Masters champion is Jack Nicklaus, who captured the Green Jacket in 1986 at the age of 46. After the conclusion of the 82nd Masters Tournament, Phil Mickelson - now a 47-year-old - will eclipse perhaps the greatest golfer to ever live. I break down my pick below - check out the video for further analysis.
Here are the three reasons why Phil Mickelson will win the Masters:
1. The stats: Mickelson's game has been exceptional of late. His irons are dialed in, as he ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach. His putter, which has been a point of emphasis for the past year, is exceptional. He ranks second on Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting. At Augusta National, birdies are critical - especially on the par fives. Mickelson ranks 11th on Tour in Par 5 Scoring Average.
2. The form: One of the keys for Mickelson going into the Masters was earning a victory. He did just that by beating out an elite field at the WGC Mexico Championship. He hasn't finished outside the top-25 since January. He owns four top-5 finishes in his last six starts. To say he's coming in with momentum would be an understatement.
3. The history: How can we forget Mickelson already has three Green Jackets hanging in his closet? He won in 2004, 2006, and 2010. Some players drive down Magnolia Lane and kick it into high gear. Mickelson is no exception. There may not be another tournament where course history and knowledge matters more.
